Dry Nail Care: Why Your Nails Break and How to Fix It

By HER Beauty

Listen to article

Have you ever watched your gorgeous nails suddenly start peeling, flaking, or breaking? We totally get that frustrating feeling! Dry nails are a common problem, but luckily, there's a lot you can do to bring them back to life.

Why Do Your Nails Get Dry and Break Easily?

Your nails are actually more complex than they look. They're primarily made of a protein called keratin, just like your hair. For keratin to stay strong and flexible, it needs moisture. Without enough hydration, the nail plate becomes brittle, just like a dry leaf that snaps at the slightest touch.

Several culprits can dry out your nails. Constant exposure to water, especially hot water, can strip the nail of its natural oils. Just think about doing dishes without gloves! Chemicals in cleaning products, harsh soaps, and even some nail polish removers can also be tough on your nails. And let's not forget the weather – both cold, dry winter air and intense summer heat can dehydrate your nails.

How to Rescue Your Dry Nails

The good news is you don't have to live with brittle nails. With the right habits, you can give them the nail hydration they're craving. It's all about providing moisture and protecting them from those drying elements.

Focus on Nail Hydration

Nail hydration is your best friend against dry nails. It might sound simple, but it makes a huge difference.

Cuticle oil is your best friend: If there's one thing you should invest in, it's a quality cuticle oil. It penetrates deep into the nail and surrounding skin, providing the fats and moisture your nails lack. Use it several times a day, especially after washing your hands, and massage it in well. Hand cream for overall care: Remember that moisturizing your hands benefits your nails too. A rich, hydrating hand cream can add an extra layer of protection. Apply it often, massaging it over your nails and cuticles. Drink water:* Hydration also comes from within. Make sure you're drinking enough water throughout the day. Your body – and your nails – will thank you for it.

Protect Your Nails

Prevention is just as important as treatment when it comes to keeping your nails healthy and strong.

Wear gloves: Every time you wash dishes, clean, or work with water and soap, put on gloves. It's a simple habit that effectively protects your nails from drying out. Choose gentle products: Try switching to milder hand soaps and cleaning products. Products without harsh chemicals or sulfates are much better for your nails and skin.

Getting strong, healthy nails takes a little patience and consistent care. But we promise you, it's worth it. Your nails will become more flexible, less prone to breaking, and they'll look beautiful and well-cared for. We'll see you next time!
